what caused this deadly train the roman in new york? thousands of dollars in donations taken during a burglary of a local salvation army. the votes have been counted. the panda cub has a name. we begin with that incident in new york. a search for answers into what caused a commuter train to derail in the bronx. four people were killed and dozens injured as a train came close to landing and the harlem river. we have learned that the passengers killed ranged in age from 35 to 59. they all lived in new york. one of the victims was an audio technician for the today show. tom roussey joins us with the survivor story. >> as you said, this was a commuter train. it started appearing poughkeepsie new york. its ultimate destination was grand central station but in the bronx, it suddenly left the tracks. passengers say they never saw it coming. >> they are letting trains go

through. >> investigators are looking at whether speed or something else made the train derail on a sharp curve just before a stop in the new york city borough of the bronx. >> our mission is to understand not just what happened, but why it happened. >> investigators are from the d.c.-based national transportation safety board. they caught a flight from reagan national to go to the scene. the derailment left two men and two women dead and more than 60 injured. the seven-carf train, almost went up in the harlem river. service between new york city and albany was shut down until this afternoon causing ripple effect on other lines including one that goes to union station. tonight, most trains to d.c. were on time or close to it. >> it was actually kind of easy. >> considering the derailment happened on a busy travel day with many headed home after

thanksgiving, one woman says her half-hour delay wasn't bad. >> it was like a movie scene. >> injured passenger ryan kelly says he was asleep on the train when it jumped the tracks. >> by the time i realized what was going on, everyone was getting thrown around. this was the second derailment in six months on the metro-north commuter rail line which is run by new york's metropolitan transit authority. the other derailment did not cause any deaths. >> terrible end to the holiday weekend. thank you. carbon monoxide poisoning sent five people to the hospital. montgomery county firefighters tell us that one man became sick at a home in kensington. people were taken to the hospital after this upper carbon monoxide poisoning. prince george's county firefighters say two of the victims were working on a car while the engine was running. they were repairing the car in a closed garage on a home on cavan

road. they are in serious condition. two other victims are in fair condition. a salvation army in southwest bc is hoping for a christmas miracle after someone stole $10,000 of donations. police believe one or as many as three men rip into the building on martin luther king jr. avenue after thanksgiving. they managed to open several padlocked correction -- collection kettles and emptied out a safe. >> why would someone even think to do this to a charity? are hoping police that fingerprints and surveillance video will solve the case. if you know anything about this, you are encouraged to call police. the holiday weekend is coming to an end for many of you. it is back to work tomorrow. perhaps school. what kind of weather can we expect? >> the good news, it is not nearly as cold as it has been this time the last four night. temperatures are a lot milder things to cloud cover.

43 degrees outside the belfort furniture weather center. 39 at dallas -- dulles. the clouds just off the north and west, they are a bit thicker at this time. it is not going to last very long. the cloud cover is quickly progressing toward the south and the east. early tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the upper 20's to middle 30's. mostly cloudy skies. we are talking about a warm up by the end of the week with temperatures in the middle 50's. how long question mark the tale is coming up in a few minutes. >> steve, thank you. suspense is over tonight. the national zoo's panda cub has a name. it was unveiled during a grand ceremony at the zoo. jay korff is in the newsroom with the answer to the question that many visitors have wondered about for months. tradition, the giant panda cut was named on its 100th day after birth.

she is known as bao bao, and him that adoring fans say suits her well. >> the festive sunday night at the national zoo in washington. it was overshadowed earlier in the day by a small furry creature native to china. sunday afternoon, u.s. and chinese dignitaries announced bao bao as the name of the zoo's female giant panda cub, daughter to mei xiang and tiaj tn tian. online voters pick from five names. bao bao came out on top. the name means precious or treasure. >> it sounds -- >> anybody love pandas? >> zoo patrons could not be happier about bao bao's projects -- progress.

clinic that was established in 1958 and has been at the forefront in providing education, counseling, care to people with aids and hiv. overseas, pope francis marked world aids day. he addressed thousands of people who gathered at st. peter's square. the pope called on catholics around the world to pray for those suffering from aids and hiv. he also asked people to pray for the doctors and researchers working to find treatments and a cure for that disease. funeral services were held in south carolina today for a postal worker who was shot and killed in prince george's county. family members and friends gathered in rock hill to say goodbye to tyson barnette. he was killed while delivering mail along reed street and landover. relatives say barnette was a good man. >> he is the type of guy that anyone could love. people --cared about

we never thought it would happen in our family. >> police are still looking for barnette's taylor. yesterday, officers handed out flyers in the neighborhood where barnett was killed hoping to get some leads. a gunshot was fired aboard a metro train. metro transit police say two men got onto an argument on an orange line train that was headed to new carrollton. one of the men pulled out a gun and hit the other man over the head with it. the gun discharged and the bullet broke a window on the train. when the train arrived, police arrested the man with the gun. an emotional vigil at the site of a crash that killed actor paul walker. what investigators say was a factor in the accident. big changes for food truck operators in the district. we are going to tell you why. >> i am run burgundy. thanks for joining us tonight. , but have a surprise guest

like you are watching abc 7 news at 11:00, on your side. >> prince george's county police have identified a man shot to death after a party. it happened friday near landover. 23-year-old -- of hyattsville was shot during a discipline -- dispute following an after-hours party. $25,000 is up to being offered for information leading to an arrest in this case. it was an emotional scene and gathering today at the scene of a crash that killed actor paul walker. friend and fellow actor thai reese gibson cried as he placed flowers among the growing pile of flowers and candles. police say speed was a factor in the crash in the community of valencia in southern california. investigators say walker was a passenger in the porsche driven by his friend roger rodas. the car slammed into a light pole and burst into flames. fans are stunned by this loss. >> i am in shock. paul walker.

so sad. >> paul walker is one of those americans that made this country who we are. he dropped everything he could and would do everything that he could do to help. >> walker was in valencia for a fundraiser benefiting victims of the recent typhoon in the philippines. findhers fear they could wreckage from a deadly helicopter crash in class out. the police helicopter crashed into a pub on friday night. at least eight people were killed. a dozen more were injured. investigators are trying to figure out what figured -- what caused the chopper to go down. an update on the condition of an american war veteran detained in north korea. a swedish says ambassador has visited the korean war that and says he is in good condition. newman was taken into custody more than a month ago just as he was about to leave the country after a 10-day night seeing visit. the united states and north korea do not have diplomatic

relations. sweden represents u.s. interest in that country. the university of virginia trying to crack down on an annual event that involves students attempting to finish off a fifth of liquor before yesterday's game between uva and virginia tech. a charlottesville newspaper reports that administrators reached out to try to minimize participation in the event this year. they will be surprised if you can't find your favorite trip -- don't be surprised if you can't find your favorite food truck in its normal spot. starting tomorrow, operators will have their spaces assigned by lottery. art is abating trucks will get to park in their assigned spaces for four hours each weekday. trucks that don't participate can still sell food in d.c. but they have to stay at least 200 feet away from the assigned spaces and pay parking meter fees as well. let's hope the weather will cooperate for that walk to the food truck tomorrow. it is going to feel a lot

better out there tomorrow. we can get rid of that biting chill we have had for the past role days. we are going to improve things. as we move through the next couple of days, temperatures will warm but not a whole lot. we will see in just a minute. temperature at reagan national airport, 44 degrees. since we don't have any wind, there is no wind chill to worry about. the same case for tomorrow morning. 48 degrees was the high earlier. average for this stay was 52 and the record high, 75. -- a cut as cold as 14 degrees. that is a long-standing record. woodbridge had a high today of 48 degrees. 43 in the district. head over to college park, now at 43. their high did cracked the 50 degree mark. temperatures are slow to cold this evening due to cloud cover. we're going to keep clouds for the overnight. 39 in gaithersburg.
